Next Tuesday, June 3rd, my dear spouse is having open-heart surgery (a double bypass operation). I'm optimistic about the operation & we're fantastically lucky to have found out about the problem, have medical insurance, have a bit of savings to tide us over the loss of income, etc. ... but I'm still scared, from time to time. Later this month we hope to celebrate our 10th wedding/handfasting anniversary. (Please, God. Please, Goddess.)
Good wishes, majick, prayers & positive energy will be most gratefully received, both Tuesday morning & in the coming weeks. I don't know when I'll be back online--the hospital does not seem to have public Internet access--so assume that "no news is good news" & keep a good thought for us, please. If you hanker for tedious details check out my ohikennedy LJ entry. Lots of medicalese but not a lot more substance, when all's written & read.Current Location: home (Omigawd FL) Current Mood: worried Current Music: none; desk fan

Monday, March 31st, is the last day to suggestion a name for NASA's GLAST satellite. GLAST (the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope) is scheduled to launch in May 2008. NASA won't name a satellite or mission after a living person. Since that is, unfortunately, no longer an issue in Sir Clarke's case, I suggest that anyone who is interested nominate one of the following 2 names for the GLAST: ARTHUR C. CLARKE (for his contributions as a science fiction and technical writer; promoter of the ideas of geostationary satellites for telecommunications and of space elevators; and for his personal love of learning and adventure) SENTINEL (in honor of Clarke's short story, "The Sentinel," which was the basis for the novel and screenplay "2001: A Space Odyssey," written in collaboration with Stanley Kubrick) Suggest a name for the GLAST at http://glast.sonoma.edu:81/glastname/
See more information about Arthur C. Clarke at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_C._Clarke and http://www.clarkefoundation.org/ See more information about "The Sentinel" at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sentinel_%28short_story%29 More GLAST info at http://www.nasa.gov/glast Thanks to the resplendent folkmew for suggesting this & goosing me to actually follow through with the nomination, & to carolffor suggesting Sentinel as another possible name. Now go do it!Current Location: home Current Mood: determined Current Music: none
